I've been a serious semi-pro low limit Hold'm player since November 2004,
although I have played online since 2000.
Semi-pro?
All I'm saying is I play poker like it's a job. I have certain hours daily that I play. My
wife knows when I'm playing and is comfortable with it (there is a wife poker tax that
needs to be paid, more on that at a different time).
DJ (wife) is actually the reason I'm in this position to be making money on a consistent
basis. She took me to my 1st casino and within 1 hour I had won $200 playing the slots. We
went back the next day so I could prove it was not that easy and I was
correct. At that point I had my first epiphany. I decided to learn everything I could
about casinos and the games they play. There MUST be some way I could make money.
This led me to Black Jack and card counting. I became semi-famous on Stanford Wong's
forum in the early 90's and Grinder was born. I created the website, I learned several
card counting systems, and I ran team of counters and made out fairly well. The problem
was that casinos around here have rotten rules and in reality - you need money to make
money in BJ. Winning one small bet an hour is standard and - boring at the nickel
tables.
In 1995, a "net" friend called me and said he had gotten out of BJ and was
playing a new form of Poker called Texas Hold'm. That was all well and good but, I was not
a poker player. All that bluffing and tells and so forth. Not for me.
In 2000 online poker was just starting to make waves. For shits and giggles I
registered at Paradise Poker which I THINK was the biggest place on the net. I put in
$100, had a run and lost it. I did it again, $100, lost it. But it was freakishly fun. At
that point I had my second epiphany. I would learn everything there was about Texas
Hold'm.
I purchased books and put more money online - THIS time on short handed tables. In 2
months I won $2000 playing $1/2 $2/4, THIS WAS GREAT! I then hit a losing streak and
decided that I had my run, cashed out $1000 and felt good.
2001 - Same thing - put in $100, won $3000, hit a losing streak, cashed out with
$2000. However - something was wrong. Every time I played I was getting BAD heartburn.
Stress? Another problem, I was getting addicted to winning, truly addicted. I started to
get up and play 10 minutes before work, I started ignoring the family, MUST PLAY!!! This
was not good YET - I was winning.
2002 - I took a year off and continued to read - I purchased Turbo Texas Hold'm so I
could still play and I obsessed over the game.
2003 - I started my full ring experience. Slower pace - no heart burn, played
sporadically AND WON! I played micro limits and after my third $100 I had my 1st real
winning run and have never put more $$ into Neteller.
2004 - In November I made a plan. I was not going to NOT turn tail and run at
the first sign on losing. I would keep records EVERY day, I would be adult about
this. How far could I actually go!!
2005 - same old
stuff but I started a blog to keep myself sane and continued to do well. Had a
nightmare few weeks in 3/6 and lost 240 Big Bets in a matter of 10 days. Came back
fine though. Also took the first of many (hopefully) Poker Island Vacations.
2006 - more of the
same - continue to move up slowly. Except now I write for Full Tilt Magazine as a
featured columnist from time to time and write the blog daily.
NO PRESSURE THERE.
And here we
are, 949 days later and $32,000 richer. All playing $1/2 up to $5/10 - not bad for
2.5 years of keeping track!
2007
- with the advent of The Bill, Limit Full Rings games, at least
for Americans went belly up. I became a skilled player with nowhere
to play. I dabbled around with NL ring games for a number of months
but I seem to tilt a lot at the wrong times.
However
- I have always been good in NL SNG's and that is where my head is at now.
If you are still interested - come along for the ride and see what happens next in
Grinders Poker Adventure, it's been interesting so far and I am by far not finished, the
story is just beginning! I'll have hands I've played wrong, antidotes, stories and
commentary about poker and gambling in general. There is more to making money
gambling online then poker you know!
